Chemical Safety

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Read and apply SDS guidance
  • Store incompatible chemicals separately
  • Respond to chemical exposures
  • Dispose of chemical waste properly

Chemical Hazard Categories

OSHA GHS categorizes chemical hazards as: Physical (flammable, explosive, oxidizer, compressed gas, self-reactive) and Health (acute toxicity, skin/eye irritation, sensitization, carcinogen, reproductive toxicity, STOT). Know the category of chemicals you handle before starting work.

Storage & Compatibility

Never store incompatible chemicals together. Key incompatibilities: acids + bases (violent reaction), oxidizers + flammables (fire/explosion), acids + cyanides (toxic gas). Store flammables in flammable storage cabinets. Oxidizers must be separated from organics. Ground metal containers when transferring flammable liquids.

Exposure Response

Skin contact: flush with water for 15-20 minutes minimum. Eye contact: eyewash station, flush for 15-20 minutes. Inhalation: fresh air, call 911 if symptomatic. Ingestion: call Poison Control 1-800-222-1222. Follow SDS Section 4 guidance. Never induce vomiting unless directed by Poison Control. Report all exposures.

Waste Disposal

Chemical waste must be disposed of according to federal, state, and local regulations. Never pour chemicals down the drain or onto the ground. Label all waste containers with contents and hazards. Segregate hazardous waste. Contact your supervisor for proper disposal — improper disposal is a federal violation with significant penalties.
