The Fatal Four
OSHA identifies four hazards that cause over 60% of construction fatalities: 1. Falls (leading cause). 2. Struck-By (vehicles, tools, equipment). 3. Caught-In/Between (trenches, machinery). 4. Electrocution. Every LEO worker must recognize and actively avoid these hazards daily.
Pre-Task Hazard Assessment
Before starting ANY task: stop, look, and assess. Ask: What could kill or injure me? What equipment is moving nearby? Are there overhead hazards? Is the ground stable? Have all permits been obtained? Document findings on your Daily Hazard Assessment form.
Site Awareness
On active construction sites: always wear your hi-vis vest, stay in designated pedestrian paths, watch for mobile equipment blind spots, never walk under suspended loads, and communicate with equipment operators before entering their work zone. Make eye contact — don't assume you've been seen.
Tool and Material Hazards
Falling tools and materials are a major struck-by hazard. Use tool lanyards when working at height. Barricade below overhead work. Stack materials safely — no more than 2:1 height-to-base ratio. Inspect rigging and lifting equipment before each use.
