Fire Triangle & Classes
Fire requires fuel, oxygen, and heat (ignition). Remove any one element to extinguish. Fire classes: A (ordinary combustibles — wood, paper), B (flammable liquids — fuel, solvents), C (energized electrical), D (combustible metals), K (cooking oils). Know your fire class before selecting an extinguisher.
Extinguisher Selection
ABC dry chemical extinguishers are standard on LEO sites and handle most fire types. CO2 extinguishers are used near sensitive equipment. Halon/clean agent for electronics. Check the gauge monthly — the needle must be in the green. Extinguishers must be inspected annually by a certified technician.
PASS Technique
P — Pull the pin. A — Aim at the base of the fire. S — Squeeze the handle. S — Sweep side to side. Only attempt to fight a fire if: it is small (wastebasket size), you have a clear exit behind you, the fire alarm has been activated, and you are trained. When in doubt, evacuate.
Hot Work Permits
Any work that produces sparks or open flame (welding, cutting, grinding) in non-designated areas requires a Hot Work Permit. Steps: obtain permit from superintendent, clear 35-ft radius of combustibles, post a fire watch, check area 30 minutes after work completion. Never perform hot work near fuel storage.
