The GHS System
The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) standardizes hazard communication worldwide. Under OSHA HazCom 2012, all chemical containers must bear GHS-compliant labels with pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, and precautionary statements.
Reading an SDS
Safety Data Sheets have 16 standardized sections. Key sections: Section 2 (Hazard Identification), Section 4 (First Aid), Section 7 (Handling & Storage), Section 8 (Exposure Controls/PPE), Section 14 (Transport). SDS binders are located at the site trailer and toolbox.
Label Elements
Every GHS label must include: Product Identifier, Signal Word (DANGER or WARNING), Hazard Pictograms, Hazard Statements, Precautionary Statements, and Supplier Information. Never remove or deface a chemical label.
Site Requirements
Know where the SDS binder is located before you begin work. If you cannot find the SDS for a chemical you are using, STOP work and contact your supervisor. Right-to-know is a federal right — you can always request SDS information.
