Hand & Power Tools

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Inspect tools before each use
  • Use tools for their intended purpose only
  • Understand grounding and double-insulation
  • Apply proper guarding requirements

Pre-Use Inspection

Before using any tool: inspect for damage (cracks, missing guards, frayed cords), ensure guards are in place, verify the tool is rated for the job, and check that it is clean and dry. Tag out and remove any defective tool. Never use damaged tools — 'I'll fix it later' causes injuries.

Hand Tools

Use the right tool for the right job. Keep cutting tools sharp — dull tools require more force and cause slipping. Always cut away from your body. Store tools properly — never leave tools on elevated surfaces where they could fall. Use non-sparking tools in flammable environments.

Power Tools — Electrical Safety

All electric power tools must be: double-insulated OR grounded (3-prong). Never remove the ground prong. Use GFCI protection. Keep cords away from heat, oil, and sharp edges. Disconnect power before adjusting, cleaning, or changing accessories. Never carry a tool by its cord.

Guards & Abrasives

NEVER remove guards from grinders, saws, or other power tools. Ensure abrasive wheels are rated for the tool's RPM. Inspect wheels for cracks before use (ring test). Wear face shield in addition to safety glasses when grinding. Maximum RPM is stamped on the wheel — never exceed it.
