Why LOTO Matters
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) prevents the unexpected energization or release of stored energy during servicing. Energy sources include: electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, thermal, gravity, and chemical. Failure to LOTO is a leading cause of serious workplace injuries.
The 8-Step LOTO Procedure
1. Notify affected employees. 2. Identify all energy sources. 3. Shut down the equipment. 4. Isolate energy sources. 5. Apply lockout/tagout devices. 6. Release/restrain stored energy. 7. Verify isolation (test). 8. Perform maintenance. Reverse steps in exact order to restore energy.
Lockout vs. Tagout
LOCKOUT uses a physical lock that can only be removed by the worker who applied it. TAGOUT uses a tag to warn others — it provides warning only, not physical restraint. Lockout is always preferred. Tagout is only permitted when the equipment cannot be locked out.
Group LOTO
When multiple workers service equipment, each worker applies their OWN personal lock to a hasp. ALL locks must be removed before energy is restored. Never remove another worker's lock — this is a terminable offense at LEO.
