Scaffold Types & Hazards
Common types: tube-and-coupler, fabricated frame (baker), and mobile (rolling). Top hazards: falls from platform, scaffold collapse, struck-by falling objects, and electrical contact. Scaffolds must be designed to support at least 4x the intended load. Never modify or alter scaffold components.
Competent Person Requirements
A qualified Competent Person must erect, move, dismantle, and inspect all scaffolds. Workers may not use a scaffold until the Competent Person has inspected it. Scaffold tags (Green/Yellow/Red) must be posted. Red tag = do not use. Inspect daily and after any event that could affect integrity.
Platforms & Guardrails
Scaffold platforms must be fully planked. Gaps larger than 1 inch between planks are not permitted. Guardrail systems are required at 10 feet: top rail at 38-45 inches, mid-rail, and toe board (minimum 3.5 inches). Debris nets or catch platforms are required if work is performed below.
Safe Access
Use proper access — ladders, stair towers, or built-in frames. Never climb cross-braces. Ensure wheels on mobile scaffolds are locked before use. Move mobile scaffolds only when empty. Do not erect scaffolds within 10 feet of uninsulated power lines (three-phase) or or within reach of energized lines.
