Spill Prevention & Response

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Identify spill response materials on your site
  • Execute containment and cleanup procedures
  • Know reporting requirements for spills
  • Apply secondary containment best practices

Spill Prevention

The best spill response is preventing the spill. Secondary containment requirements: all containers over 55 gallons must have secondary containment (110% of the largest container volume). Inspect containers daily. Keep absorbent materials on-site. Maintain drip pans under equipment. Inspect hoses and fittings regularly.

Initial Response

For any spill: 1. Assess — is it safe to respond? 2. Notify your supervisor immediately. 3. Stop the source if safe to do so. 4. Contain the spill — use absorbents, berms, and plugs. 5. Prevent entry to storm drains, waterways, and soil. 6. Do not wash spills into storm drains — this is an environmental violation.

Hazardous Material Spills

For spills of hazardous materials: evacuate non-essential personnel, wear appropriate PPE (chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, apron, respirator), reference the SDS for guidance, notify the superintendent, and document the incident. Large spills (above reportable quantity) require immediate notification to environmental authorities.

Cleanup & Disposal

Use appropriate absorbents — clay absorbent for oil/fuel, vermiculite for chemicals. Place contaminated materials in sealed, labeled containers. Do not mix waste streams. Contaminated materials are classified as hazardous waste in most cases. Work with your superintendent to arrange proper disposal. Document all spill cleanup activities.
